Oral Pathology

The mouth is not only filled with teeth. There are a number of structures including the jawbone, tongue, cheeks, palate, salivary glands and more.

The mouth is lined with mucosa that is normally pink. Any change in appearance or texture of any of these structures could be sign of a pathological process. This can be anything from developmental abnormalities to traumatic lesions and/or infection. However the most serious of these includes tumours and cancers.

Oral health practitioners are trained to identify abnormalities of the teeth and all the surrounding structures. Further consultation and assessment with an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon is often required and occasionally further investigation with a biopsy to obtain a definitive diagnosis.
